Second Step
Shoesmith teaches social-emotional learning (SEL) through the Second Step Program, an evidence-based curriculum designed to improve students’ self-regulation and social skills. Reach out to Mrs. Haller or talk to your child's teacher to learn more about Second Step or obtain Home Links. Home Links are handouts for parents that correspond to Second Step lessons so that you can continue to practice SEL skills at home too.
Calm Classroom
Calm Classroom is another SEL program used at Shoesmith that teaches mindfulness techniques to help reduce stress, improve focus, and increase self-awareness. Talk to Mrs. Haller to learn more and click below for an e-book to incorporate Calm Classroom practices into your routine at home.
Bullying Prevention
October is National Bullying Prevention Month! Bullying can cause significant harm to a child and directly impact his or her ability to learn and participate in extra-curricular activities. Bullying is defined as aggressive or unwanted behaviors that meet the following criteria:
(1) There is an observed or perceived imbalance of power.
(2) The behavior is severe or happens repeatedly.
(3) The physical or emotional harm is caused on purpose.
According to research conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, Bureau of Justice, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 20% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying nationwide. At Shoesmith, we actively combat bullying by teaching positive social and responsible bystander skills to our students.
